Storyteller, a game centered around writing, word puzzles, and the elaborate narratives we construct to navigate our daily lives, will soon be available for Android and iOS via Netflix starting September 26th. Developed by Annapurna Interactive, the game was initially released for Switch and PC on March 23rd after a remarkable decade-long development journey.
Back in 2011, solo inventor Daniel Benmergui introduced the world to Storyteller, and in 2012, the game’s prototype garnered the prestigious Nuovo prize for innovation at the Game Developers Conference. However, life took its course, leading Benmergui to put Storyteller on hold for a few years. Fortunately, he eventually resumed work on the project and partnered with Annapurna for publishing.
In Storyteller, players construct storylines using comic book-style building blocks, shaping the lives, deaths, romances, and betrayals of medieval characters along the way. The game offers a calming, engaging, and often comical experience that captures the wild imagination of the creative writing process.
Upon its release for iOS and Android in September, Storyteller will introduce free downloadable content (DLC) that enables users to weave fresh tales. This additional content will be accessible at no cost on both the Switch and PC versions.
The collaboration between Storyteller and Netflix aligns with the current trend of independent games joining the platform. Netflix is rapidly expanding its collection of mobile games, all of which are free to play for Netflix members. By the end of the year, the streaming giant plans to offer nearly 100 titles in its library. Notably, Netflix has already introduced acclaimed games such as Kentucky Route Zero, Oxenfree, Spiritfarer, Into the Breach, Moonlighter, Laya’s Horizon, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, Valiant Hearts: Going Home, and many others to iOS and Android. Furthermore, Night School Studio, the creator of Oxenfree, has become a full-fledged part of Netflix through acquisition.
